News Date: June 10, 2005 Army Tests hydrogen Fuel Truck on Cross Country Journey A truck modified to incorporate hydrogen gas along with a gasoline fueled internal combustion engine drove 2,650 miles from California to Washington, D.C., and arrived Friday, according to the Army.
The US Army's Tank Automotive Research Development and Engineering Center worked with Sunline Transit and the Southwest Research Institute to modify standard Class 8 commercial truck to use a fuel cell auxiliary power unit that runs on hydrogen gas to power the engine's electrical functions. Hydrogen was stored onboard in 3 pressurized tanks.
Removing the power burden of running onboard electronic systems from the internal combustion engine increased fuel efficiency.
