News Date: May 25, 2005 Bush Visits A Hydrogen Fueling Station President Bush's tour of the hydrogen fueling station at Benning Road was led by Rick Scott, Operations and Safety Coordinator, Shell Hydrogen, L.L.C. The President used the oppertunity to promote his commitment to alternative fuels and renewable energy. The President also urged lawmakers to support his US$1.7 billion energy bill that would reduce America’s need for imported oil and help clean the air by aiding the development of hydrogen fuel cells and affordable hydrogen-powered cars.
While at the station the President refueled a General Motors hydrogen-powered minivan. This spring, an agreement between GM and the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE)was announced that provided the auto manufacturer $88-million over five years to build a 40-vehicle fuel cell fleet and further develop the technology.
In a separate commercial agreement, Shell Hydrogen will support GM by setting up five hydrogen refueling stations in Washington, DC., metropolitan New York City and between Washington D.C. and New York, or the “East Coast Corridor,” and in California. Other program partners include the U.S. Army at Ft. Belvoir, Va. and Quantum Technologies in Lake Forest, Calif. – providing facilities for GM to store and maintain fuel cell vehicles; NextEnergy in Detroit, Mich. for codes and standards development; and Viewpoint Systems in Rochester, New York for collecting and retrieving data remotely.
